The Never Ending Hole - A Teen's Perspective on Divorce
Divorce. Divorce is a scary thing to think about. You thought your family was perfect. You have a great relationship with everyone. Whenever you guys are together, you laugh and smile.
Do you know that feeling you get when you were planning on having a great night with your family or friends? You thought it was going to be the best night of your life. But then, the plans are cancelled. You get a bad grade on a project. You and your best friend are in a big fight.
And then, you go in a room with your mom and dad and you feel like you can barely breathe. They are getting divorced.
So many thoughts run through your head. “Is it my fault?” “Will my life ever be the same?"
Your parents can tell that you aren't dealing with it well, so they ask, “what is wrong?” Of course we say, “nothing.” “I'm fine.” “It doesn’t matter.” But deep down inside you can feel that trust and honesty that you have built up, fall like pure gold china slamming against the floor. You carry on with your life like nothing happened. You feel yourself falling into a hole of darkness, and sadness. You try and get out, but it’s too late.
More problems evolve. Your sister gets bullied at school, and your other sister needs a speech therapist. Then those questions start coming back to you. “Is this my fault?” “Will my life ever be the same?”
For now, you have to stay in that deep, dark, sad hole, and watch all of those family memories fade away. Forever hoping that one day, it will all go back to the way it was.
Everything starts to tear apart; your relationships, your trust, your honesty. Soon, you find yourself doing the same thing day by day, month by month, year by year. The never ending hole of darkness, sadness, and frustration continues. You try hard to be happy, positive and helpful. But you can’t. You lose sleep, don’t feel like eating, and always feel depressed. None of your friends seem to like you anymore. You can’t help it. People start judging you by your looks, hobbies, and actions. You feel hopeless, useless, and dumb. You feel that no one can help you. No one.
But you see a light…a light inside of this never ending hole. Inside the light there are people. People who take you as YOU. People who don’t judge what you wear, or what you do. They help to show you the light of the world. You are confused about who or what is the light of the world. You watch everyone start to be themselves. No more faking it! Day by day, people start coming to you saying that you are the light of the world. Time has come into play but for now, you are back on the journey; picking up those pieces of gold china piece by piece. It will get better. It will.
